Transit visa to Sri Lanka

A Transit Visa is an entry permit granted to a foreign national for admission into Sri Lanka for a brief period which is incidental and during his journey to another destination. Those who want to transit through Sri Lanka should also obtain an ETA by paying the relevant ETA Processing fee. However, if the transit period is less than 48 hrs, passengers are not required to pay the ETA Processing Fee.

This visa is for people who are visiting Sri Lanka for the following purposes:

  • Transiting through Sri Lanka

If you have a stopover in Sri Lanka but DO NOT leave the transit area of the airport, you normally do not need a transit visa. Please check with your airline for details, since they are the ones that might stop you from boarding the airplane to Sri Lanka.

Transit visas are necessary if you plan to transit through the country on the way to a third country, for example by changing airport or if you arrive by airplane and shortly thereafter depart by boat.

Your travel authorization (ETA) is registered electronically through your passport number. After you have been granted authorization you can if you wish print the e-mail and bring on your trip, however that is not a requirement.

Please note that if you are not leaving the airport, a transit visa is not required.
